On November 11, 2011 the FBI San Francisco Citizens' Academy Alumni Association hosted its largest quarterly event. The meeting was hosted by Chevron in San Ramon. Sacramento CAAA and FBI retired and active agents were also invited .

FBISFCAAA was privileged to have special guest speaker SSA George Piro who was the lead interrogator for the debriefing of Saddam Hussein after his capture in Iraq. MORE INFO

The FBI has announced an update for the Child ID App.

In response to user feedback, the FBI Child ID App has been updated with new features, including password protection and additional photo capabilities. To download the update, go to the iTunes store and click on the Apps button.

The FBI launched the Child ID app back in August 2011—this is first mobile application created by the FBI—provides a convenient place to electronically store photos and vital information about your children so that it’s literally right at hand if you need it. You can show the pictures and provide physical identifiers such as height and weight to security or police officers on the spot. Using a special tab on the app, you can also quickly and easily e-mail the information to authorities with a few clicks. MORE INFO...

FBI to implement facial recognition capabiity

The FBI by early next year plans to begin to test a nationwide facial recognition service in select states that will allow local police to identify unknown subjects in photos. The federal government is embarking on a multiyear overhaul of the FBI's existing fingerprint database to more quickly and accurately identify suspects, partly through applying other biometric markers, such as iris scans and voice recordings. FBI Director Robert Mueller approved for another two years

The Senate has unanimously voted to keep FBI Director Robert Mueller in office for another two years, extending a term that had been set to expire August 2, 2011. In keeping with Mueller's low-key preferences, FBI officials planned no statement. It was not clear if he would be sworn in for the extended term. "It has not been determined whether under the circumstances a swearing-in is necessary," a senior FBI official said. "The Justice Department is reviewing the question."

The FBI San Francisco Division is pleased to announce the fall 2011 San Francisco FBI Teen Academy. The Academy will take place on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at the RCFL in Menlo Park, from 8:15 am - 5:00 pm.

The FBI Teen Academy will educate high school students about the mission, goals, and inner workings of the FBI. The Academy will include a one-day block of instruction in which students will hear several presentations on topics to include: cyber, violent crime/gangs, recruiting requirements, evidence response, SWAT, and the day to day operations of a typical FBI office.

Entry Requirements:

• Must be a current high school student (11th or 12th grade) at a Bay Area school

• Must obtain permission from parent/guardian AND school principal or guidance counselor

• Must submit a completed application (see attached)

• Must agree to attend the entire one-day session

• Must be able to secure their own transportation to/from the RCFL, as transportation will not be provided

Members of the FBI San Francisco Cirizens' Academy Alumni Association have been invited to attend a tour of the CA Air National Guard 129th Rescue Wing at Moffett Field on Thursday / August 11th.

The the 129th Rescue Wing's mission is to train and prepare to perform its military mission to provide combat search and rescue anywhere in the world. The 129th also supports a wide variety of civilian search and rescue missions, including distressed persons aboard ships, lost or injured hikers, and medical evacuations.

This event is SOLD OUT and was only open to Member's in good standing of the FBISFCAAA.

The SF FBI and Santa Cruz Police Department are seeking assistance from the public in identifying 2008 Santa Cruz firebombers. Two years after firebombs forced one University of California researcher and his family to flee their home and another destroyed a researcher’s car, the SF FBI and Santa Cruz Police Department are still searching for those responsible.

The FBI is still offering a $20,000 reward in addition to the $30,000 offered by the City of Santa Cruz for any information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

SF FBI Foreign Language Recruitment Fair

The FBI is looking for linguists who are fluent in a variety of languages. If you know anyone who can speak, read, and write a foreign language at a professional level and is interested in working as a linguist for the FBI, please ask him/her to apply online at http://www.fbijobs.gov/linguists.

Linguists with the FBI begin as independent contractors and may be offered permanent employment after an initial trial period. Linguists responding to this canvass could work in San Francisco or in any major field office of their preference. Contract Linguists usually work full-time (40+ hours a week), but we will consider applicants who are willing to work as little as 20 hours a week.

Please note that the hiring process requires testing and a background check process that can be lengthy. In addition, the FBI requires that linguists speak, read, and write English well. (not perfectly, but well.) Applicants must be U.S. citizens, and must have lived in the United States for three out of the last five years.

TSA Puppy Adoption Program ...

At the chapter's Spring 2010 chapter meeting we had a great presentation on the DHS/TSA bomb sniffing dog program by J R Prevatte, the Field Canine Coordinator, National Explosive Detection Canine Team Program / DHS/TSA.

JR wrapped up his presentation talking about TSA's Puppy Adoption program. Since it was started in 1999 TSA's Canine Breeding and Development Center has produced over 900 dogs and a successful training rate of over 50 percent of all dogs bred. TSA offers those dogs who do not graduate the training program for adoption

At the request of the SF FBI the San Francisco FBI Citizens' Academy Alumni Association will be working to provide outreach and program support for the FBI-SOS initiative.

The FBI-SOS Internet Challenge is an internet safety program designed to help students recognize potential dangers associated with the internet, email, chat rooms and social networking sites. The program addresses and defines topics serious in nature such as seduction, child pornography, solicitation, exploitation, obscenity and online predators. Students take web-based quizzes and review specific web sites aimed at promoting online safety.

Developed in cooperation with the FBI Crimes Against Children Unit at the Miami FBI Office, the program is administered by the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation. More info about FBI-SOS ...

FBI Code Breaking Contest...

The FBI has posted its annual code-breaking challenge on its Web site; this is the longest code-breaking challenge to date; the FBI says that the code-breaking task is similar to work being done in its labs

The agency explains that unraveling the code and reveal its secret message is similar to the work of "cryptanalysts" being done in the FBI Laboratory. In the latest quiz, the agency switched gears a bit, using pictogram symbols based on Native American motifs. Old Skool Café Receives 2009 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award

Stephanie Douglas, the Special Agent in Charge of the San Francisco office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation presented the 2009 Director’s Community Leadership Award to Old Skool Café, a non profit organization dedicated to helping neighborhood youth avoid gangs, drugs, and crime through mentoring and apprenticeship. Charter school starts Junior Agent Program

The San Francisco FBI is working with the Fremont based FAME charter school on a "junior agent" program. This effort is a perfect example of the value of the FBI's Citizens' Academy program. Maram Alaiwat the school's founder and director is also a graduate of the SF FBI Citizens' Academy and a member of the SF FBI Citizens' Academy Alumni Association. Maram approached the SF FBI to organize the "junior agent" program. The FAME program with the SF FBI is the first "Junior Agent Program" in the bay area in over a decade.

As part of the program fifth graders from FAME’s Fremont campus will participate in a four month long educational program consisting of classroom instruction by FBI staff and a field trip to the FBI office in San Francisco. The Junior Special Agent program, a part of the FBI’s larger Adopt-a-School initiative, will follow a specialized curriculum developed by the FBI to help students cultivate the tools to successfully deal with the increasingly complex challenges they face every day.

During the Summer of 2008 ducks at the reflecting pond by the U.S. capital began dying. On a really hot day after some people also had to be treated and more ducks were observed dying the U.S. Park Service became concerned that there might be a bio-terror attack underway. The FBI Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Sciences Unit, or CBRNSU for short, was called in to investigate.

It was determined that the ducks were dying from avian botulism a "naturally recurring event" during the hot summer months and the people sufferred from heat and humidity ...

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Membership I would like to acknowledge the pro-bono support provided by Cooley, Godward, Kronish.

With this completed the chapter can now join the FBI National Citizens' Academy Alumni Association and once again working with Cooley, Godward, Kronish begin preparation of the IRS Application for Recognition of Exemption.

Tour the Military Vehicle Technology Foundation "Museum"

FBI planning a bigger role in international terrorism investigations

At the Chapter's May 27th Spring 2009 Quarterly meeting FBI SA Steven Merrill gave a great and timely presentation on his recent assignment as the Assistant Legal Attaché (ALAT) in New Delhi, India. SA Merrill was the first U.S. representative on the scene at the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India.

Recent reports say the FBI and Justice Department plan to significantly expand their role in global counter-terrorism operations, part of a U.S. policy shift that will replace a CIA-dominated system of clandestine detentions and interrogations with one built around transparent investigations and prosecutions.

Under the "global justice" initiative, which has been in the works for several months, FBI agents will have a central role in overseas counter-terrorism cases. They will expand their questioning of suspects and evidence-gathering to try to ensure that criminal prosecutions are an option, officials familiar with the effort said. READ MORE

Stephanie Douglas Named Special Agent in Charge of FBI San Francisco Division

Stephanie Douglas has been named Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the FBI’s San Francisco Division. Director Robert S. Mueller, III appointed her to this position to replace SAC Charlene B. Thornton, who was recently named SAC of the FBI’s Honolulu Division. Most recently, Ms. Douglas served as a Deputy Assistant Director of the Counterintelligence Division at FBI Headquarters. SAC Stephanie Douglas has been with the FBI since 1989 and was acting special agent in charge of the San Francisco division for two months in late 2006. During that time, she oversaw investigations, including a crackdown on drug traffickers in north Richmond that resulted in seven arrests and an investigation that led to the conviction of a Walnut Creek chief executive officer for defrauding investors out of $1.5 million.
